THIS PAGE AND THE TWO TOUR SUB-PAGES WERE COMPLETED 12 JULY 2007

Just how many exciting adventures can one club possibly organise in a single year?  Judging by the tales told on this page, well over 100!  This special archive page is being compiled from all available ride reports, attendance lists and video clips from 1993.

From April 1993 we used a video camcorder on the rides instead of a photographic camera.  We have added selected stills taken from the video clips on this page, and whilst the quality of the pictures is consequently lower than in previous years we do have a much greater range of stills to choose from, with 25 pictures being recorded every second.

This page marks several firsts:

* The first time these reports have been seen since they were originally printed as part of the section newsletters at the time

* The first time that attendances have ever been seen alongside the ride reports.

* The first time that stills from video clips taken on the rides and tours have ever been seen outside Section socials, and the first time they have been linked to ride reports

If you have any photographs of any of our 1993 events, please get in touch with us so that we can add them to the page.

If you took part in any of these events we'd love to hear from you - please fill out the comments form at the end of this page, and we'll add them to our Comments page.

And of course, if you were on any of these rides you will always be welcome to join any of our current range of club rides and activities.

We have now prepared three special DVD sets covering our 1993 events, all digitally remastered in 2007 using the latest technology.  You can obtain your own copies of "South Dartmoor CTC Rides 1993", "Easter Tour 1993" and "Summer Tour 1993" from the Secretary on request.  See our DVDs page for more details.

Sunday 3 January

Afternoon ride (BF): Skerraton Down

10 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Goss, Thain Hatherly, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Ben Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather:

Another exciting ride across the open moorland just behind Buckfastleigh offered plenty of entertainment.

Friday 8 January

Social: Risk

1900-2200

6 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Burge, Richard Goss, Michael Jones, Chris Platt, Eliot Wright

This ever-popular game kept us well entertained for our first social of 1993.

Sunday 10 January

Day Ride: Harford

4 Present: Neil Ault, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt

Weather: wet

Today's ride became yet another casualty of the bad weather, but Paul and Chris made the most of the chance for an extra Crofters social.

Sunday 17 January

Morning ride (BF): Widecombe

9 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Goss, Thain Hatherly, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, David Robinson, Ben Widger

Weather:

When Dave Robinson saw that today's Buckfastleigh morning ride was going to Widecombe, he naturally saw an ideal opportunity to visit the Green Cafe, famous within our Section for its peculiarities.  He wasn't disappointed.  The wicker furniture was still painted blue and the fan was still lying by the till, waiting for an opportunity to save its owner from the unhygienic occupation of handling customers' change.  Unusually, however, everything we ordered today was 'on', and there was a noticeable absence of dogs, birds and eccentric old ladies.

Friday 22 January

Social: ?

1900-2200

6 Present: Neil Ault, Julian Duquemin, Martin Hills, Michael Jones, Chris Platt, Eliot Wright

No report available

Sunday 24 January

Day Ride: Laurence Castle

12 Present: Michael Jones, Ben Widger ...

Weather:

An uneventful ride took us up the Teign Valley and through Trusham to the track behind Laurence Castle for lunch.  As we returned through Chudleigh, Ben learned one of the reasons for the early returns on recent rides: Michael's dynamo was broken!

Sunday 31 January

Day Ride: Buckland Tout Saints

12 Present: James Allason, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, David Robinson, Bob Taylor, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker, Ben Widger, Tom Widger

Weather: dry

There seems to be a general consensus within the Section that winter rides should get us home well before dark.  With this in mind we took a short route to the hamlet of Buckland in the South Hams, enjoyed lunch on a convenient grassy verge and then returned by the short main road route.

Sunday 7 February

Afternoon ride: Bow Cross

10 Present: Neil Ault, Dave Cutts, Richard Goss, Thain Hatherly, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Ken Twydell, Ben Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: sunny

Only Ken Twydell and Dave Cutts met the Buckfastleigh starters at Bow Cross.  We took a right turn near Broadhempston and followed the attractive Newhouse Barton lane to Ipplepen and (inevitably) Fermoys garden centre, where the usual selection of refreshments were on offer.

Sunday 14 February

Day Ride: Whooping Rock

7 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Goss, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Bob Taylor, Gary Taylor, Ben Widger

Weather: dry

Following the long climb from Bovey Tracey to Manaton we diverted along the small track that was responsible for the ride achieving an 'R' status in the runs list.  We didn't find a rock that whooped, but we did find a small cave for lunch that offered excellent views of the surrounding moorland and shelter from the cold breeze.

In order to avoid retracing our steps we continued along the track.  It turned out to be a little rougher than expected, and Bob didn't look too impressed as he was shaken about on his trusty Galaxy.  We concluded a good ride with refreshments at the Wayside cafe, Widecombe, and a stiff climb past Bone Hill to Ashburton.

Sunday 21 February

Morning ride (BF): Pinchaford

11 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Goss, Thain Hatherly, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, John Stuart, Ben Widger, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: cold

We followed the lane from Ashburton to Halshanger and Birchanger, and then set about tackling the steep, track descent to the River Lemon.  Everyone managed to reach the bottom, but when John Stuart tried to manoeuvre himself around the slippery, wooden footbridge he quickly found himself on his back, looking up at the sky.

The track climbed steeply on the other side, and it took Eliot a lot of hard pushing to reach the gateway to the open moor.  Some careful map reading eventually brought us through some unspoilt moorland scenery  to the main road near Saddle Tor.  Seb and Ben came out right beside the refreshment van, bought just enough food for themselves and then rejoined the rest of us at the bottom of the hill!

We returned to Buckfastleigh via Cold East Cross and Ashburton.

Sunday 28 February

Day Ride: Noss Mayo

11 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Goss, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker, Ben Widger, Tom Widger

Weather: sunny but cold

Having taken the easy B3210 from Avonwick to Ermington we soon found ourselves at the five-land cross-roads near Alston Hall.  The alternatives were simple: a steep climb to the lane route, or a short-cut along a muddy track that followed a stream down to the sea.  One look at the hill prompted everyone to vote for the track.

Some of the earlier sections were still frozen after the overnight frost, but the remainder turned out to be every bit as muddy as Michael remembered it.  All those without mudguards were plastered by the time they reached Membland.  Charlie wasn't particularly amused, but he didn't complain too much (t'old lad).

Dave Robinson had rung Michael the previous night suggesting that he might bring a Primus for the purpose of brewing tea for the group.  Michael thought this was a good idea and agreed to bring his camping stove with some cans of soup.  Unfortunately, Dave didn't turn up, but the rest of us enjoyed the fruits of his idea, by the water's edge at Bridgend.

We returned through Noss Mayo and the south coast route past Mothecombe.  As we neared South Brent we were greeted with the first and last real snow of the season - enough to cover both the bikes and ourselves before it stopped a few minutes later!

Our reward for calling in at the Copper Kettle cafe at South Brent was a chance meeting with Rob Spence of Torbay Section, apparently drawn to the same honeypot.

Sunday 7 March

Afternoon ride (BF): Chalk Ford

9 Present: Neil Ault, Joe Chew (J, new), Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Ben Widger, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: dry

Another of our classic romps across Dartmoor went exactly according to plan until we reached the stony track descent to Scorriton.  Michael advised the youngsters not to ride too fast, but of course they did.  Fortunately the only result was that Tom got a blow-out and the rest of us had to wait for fifteen minutes while Seb fixed it for him.

There was Star Trek (inevitably) and Hot Chocolate for those who returned to Crofters.

Sunday 14 March

Day Ride: Mamhead Obelisk

9 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Goss, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Adrian (new, A), Bob Taylor, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker

Weather: dry & cloudy

The ride through Gappah to Haldon was uneventful, and even at the Obelisk the most exciting spectacle was Neil and Michael cooking their soup again - it seems that Dave Robinson has started a trend without even showing us his Primus!

It was on top of Little Haldon that the main event of the day took place.  Seb was showing off again by riding his mountain bike off the road towards the surrounding heathland.  He saw what appeared to be a low grassy bank and decided at once that it would form the ideal resource for a jumping demonstration.  Did he think to check the far side before launching himself over the top?  Of course he didn't.  He just rode at that bank for all he was worth.

We saw him reach the bank.  We heard him squeal.  Then both he and the bike disappeared from view.  There had been a much larger drop on the far side than he had expected, but fortunately the main damage was to his pride.

We looked in at the Texas Homestore cafe in Kingsteignton, but as there was nowhere safe to leave the bikes we pressed on to Fermoys at Ipplepen for drinks and cake before returning home for about 5pm.

Friday 19 March

Social: Board Games

1900-2200

5 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Burge, Michael Jones, Chris Platt, Eliot Wright

Risk formed the main entertainment this evening.

Sunday 21 March

Morning ride (BF): Gatcombe Tracks

10 Present: Neil Ault, Thain Hatherly, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Ben Widger, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather:

Michael had to get home by 12.45 today, but when we reached the destination he became tempted by the track descent into Totnes which he had never yet ridden.  Assurances from the Totnes lads that it was an excellent descent persuaded him to try it.  Regrettably, it turned out to be as much uphill as it was downhill, so he was late home.

Sunday 28 March

Day Ride: Blackpool Sands

12 Present: James Allason, Neil Ault, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Graham Moates, Claire (Graham's friend), Paul Oakley, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker, Ben Widger

Weather: cold & windy

From Totnes we rode through Bowden and Tuckenhay to Higher Tideford, where Graham Moates and his friend Claire passed us in their car.  They decided to take the car a little further before unpacking the bikes, but we had completed the descent through the second Bowden and started to eat lunch at the beach before we saw them again.

Michael's soup failed to heat properly today, the stove being adversely affected by the cold wind.  The conditions didn't stop an elderly gentleman from going for a swim at the beach, however, a ritual he has performed daily for many years.  It really was very cold today, so we could only assume that he was totally mad.

We cycled on to Dartmouth after lunch.  The Paignton brigade then crossed the ferry to Kingswear while the rest of us popped in to the Spinning Wheel cafe for toasted teacakes and drinks.  Michael made the mistake of ordering an expensive milkshake after the proprietor assured him it was "large" - it turned out to be less than a quarter of a pint!

The forecast rain finally caught up with us as we rode back towards Totnes, making the return journey somewhat miserable.

Friday 2 April

Evening Ride (BF): Landscove

8 Present: Tristan Allen, Neil Ault, Phillip Harler, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Adrian Teague, Shane Teague, Eliot Wright

Weather: dry

Phillip was asked this evening why he hadn't been cycling for the past six months.  "I've been waiting for the evening rides to start up again," he said, "and this year I'm not going to miss a single ride."

Phillip had brought along some of his friends for our first evening ride of the new season, notably Tristan Allen, and Shane and Adrian Teague.  We hadn't ridden far, however, before we had our inaugural crash, caused on this occasion by Neil moving out without first checking that there were no other cyclists behind him.

Our route encompassed the riverside track from Staverton bridge, the quiet village of Landscove, several hills (about which Adrian complained unceasingly) and a series of three slightly muddy tracks that brought us eventually to Pridhamsleigh.  The highlight of the evening came as Adrian descended the final track in near-darkness.  He tried to go fast even though he couldn't see clearly where he was going, hit a rut and found himself falling off the edge of the track into a nest of stinging nettles and brambles!

Sunday 4 April

Afternoon ride: West Ogwell

13 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Aaron Goddard (J, new), Ben Hobday, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Harry Staniland (J, new), Charles Staniland, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Loraine Walker, Robert Walker, Eliot Wright

Weather: sunny

Harry and his father arrived at Buckfastleigh just as we were leaving, so they drove on to Peartree and met us there.  We were delayed when we noticed an upturned pregnant ewe in a field near Chuley Cross.  Closer inspection revealed that she had been struggling there for a considerable time: she was very pleased to find herself on her feet again and quickly trotted off to join the rest off the flock.

We had arranged to meet Seb at the crossroads near Lake farm "sometime after 2.45pm".  When we arrived it was nearly 3.15 and Seb had just started to wander towards Pulsford.  A posse was sent after him and eventually we rendezvoused near Wotton farm.

With all these delays it was 3.32 before we arrived at West Ogwell.  Our pickup time there should have been 3.15pm, but the newsletter said it was 3pm.  Charlie's Paignton contingent had arrived before 3pm, and at 3.31 they decided not to wait any longer and went off to Fermoys.  The rest of us couldn't have known this of course, so we assumed they hadn't arrived yet and waited until 4.10, passing the time by playing with Michael's new camcorder!

Eventually we gave up and went home.  The problem was that the Section's procedural documents have not been updated or distributed since 1989.  We'll correct this very soon so that such misunderstandings cannot arise again.

Friday 9 April

Evening Ride (BF): Spitchwick

8 Present: Neil Ault, Phillip Harler, Martin Hills, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Adrian Teague, Shane Teague, Eliot Wright

Weather: sunny

Adrian Teague, with Phillip Harler looking on

Paul Oakley

This was a perfect evening for Hembury Woods and Dartmoor.  There was nobody else around at Spitchwick so the youngsters rode around on the grassy heath, dipping an occasional wheel into the cool waters of the Dart.  Adrian was determined to be the star of the Section's first video, so he fell off his bike backwards and was rewarded with a round of applause.

The majority were in favour of returning by the same route so that they could descend the Hembury track in the dark.  Michael, who had just cleaned and serviced his bike ready for Monday's Cornish Coast tour, foolishly allowed himself to be persuaded to join the others down the track.  During the descent he found out that he had put his rear brake shoes on the wrong way around: the result was that one of his new, expensive Campag blocks slid out of its shoe and was lost in the woodland debris of the path.  He spent ten minutes trying to find it with the help of a dynamo light before he finally had to admit defeat.

Sunday 11 April

Afternoon ride (BF): Easter Special

9 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Lee Higman (13, new), Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, John Stuart, Ben Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: wet

The only special thing about today's ride was the weather - specially miserable!  We braved the elements as far as Gidley Bridge and then returned speedily to Crofters for an indoor Easter Special, consisting mainly of computer games and Star Trek videos.

Monday 12 April

Friday 16 April

Evening Ride (BF): Staverton

11 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Peter Furneaux, Phillip Harler, Michael Jones, Chris Platt, Nick Radmore, John Stuart, Adrian Teague, Shane Teague, Eliot Wright

Weather: dry

This ride turned into a repeat of the first evening ride, except that we missed out Landscove and it was Chris who fell into the nettles on the track descent to Pridhamsleigh instead of Adrian - his screams of anguish could be heard within a five mile radius!

Sunday 18 April

Day Ride: Graetor Village

10 Present: James Allason, Tao Burgess, Harry Hall, John (Harry Hall's friend), Lee Higman, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Bob Taylor, Charlie Walker, Eliot Wright

Weather: windy with sunny spells

Lunch near the bridge at Becka Brook

Seb left home very late this morning but he still managed to get to Bickington, totally out of breath, as we were climbing the hill to Haytor.  The explanation for this unusual state of affairs was that he was looking after the house during his parents' absence, evidently leaving him somewhat disorganised.

The tramway led us behind Haytor, from where we took tracks to Hole rock and down to the footbridge by the Becka Brook.  Some of the adult members of the group didn't seem too impressed with the rocky terrain, but everyone enjoyed lunch by the stream.

After a steep climb to the site of the medieval village of Graetor, Seb introduced us to an easier route around Hound Tor that avoided the final climb.  The Paignton group wanted to get home early so they set off for home while the rest of us queued for refreshments from the ice cream van.

From the Avonwick pick-up we rode along the river Avon to Diptford, descended the track from Curtisknowle and enjoyed lunch in the woods by the riverside.  Tom was most envious of Michael and Neil who proceeded to heat and then eat a large can of Sainsbury soup.

The track back to Gara Bridge turned out to be rather muddy in places.  Charlie took Andy home early while the rest of us pressed on to the goat farm for refreshments, bumping into Rob Spence from Torbay Section along the way.  We got back to Buckfastleigh by 1520 which left Ben just enough time to watch another exciting episode of Star Trek from Michael's comprehensive video library before returning to Totnes.

Friday 30 April

Evening Ride (BF): Venford Reservoir

7 Present: Neil Ault, Julian Duquemin, Phillip Harler, Daniel Harris, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Nick Radmore

Weather: sunny

Having spent an hour or so climbing up to the reservoir, we took our usual track across the moor, struggling through the gorse until we found the path to Michelcombe.  It is a steep descent through a secluded valley - a truly delightful ride for those who like a challenge.

Friday 7 May

Evening Ride (BF): Avon Dam

10 Present: Neil Ault, Joseph Bellows, Julian Duquemin, Dayle Guy, Phillip Harler, Martin Hills, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Eliot Wright

Weather: sunny but cold

This is one ride that we'll never forget.  There is a walkway running along the top of the dam with a shoulder-high wall on either side.  As usual, some of the youngsters walked along to the centre, but Dayle thought he would add variety by taking his bike and riding along the top of the inside wall for a short distance.  Then he had the bright idea of jumping his bike off the wall, dropping down to the walkway.  Everyone strongly advised him against such a foolhardy manoeuvre, but they all stayed to watch just in case he decided to proceed.  The thought of an audience was just too much for Dayle - the original showman - so he attempted the stunt.  A loud explosion accompanied the bursting of a tyre and tube; closer inspection revealed the front wheel was a write-off.  He had no choice but to push all the way back across the moor to Cross Furzes.

Julian had raced back to get his car for the final leg of the journey: he was driving up the road as the rest of us were riding down to Buckfastleigh.  We tried to stop him to invite Dayle, Martin and himself back to Crofters for a drink, but he just swerved madly round us and sped off into the distance.  Presumably Dayle never got the invite, and probably thought us most unfriendly!

Sunday 9 May

Day Ride: Lustleigh Cleave

The precarious journey across the footbridge to Houndtor Wood

We couldn't work out why Dave Robinson wasn't out today, given the opportunity to visit the Primrose cafe and see how the new owners were looking after it's reputation.  We quickly established an acceptable discount structure for our group.  The cakes weren't quite as good as they used to be, but overall the establishment seemed acceptable.

Having descended the steep, rough track to the river Bovey, Tom produced his own tin of soup and waited patiently until Michael and Neil had finished with the gas stove.  Unfortunately he had forgotten to bring a spoon, so he improvised a stirring rod by rolling up some tin foil.

The very steep climb through Houndtor Wood is never popular, although the woodland tracks to Becky Falls provide suitable compensation.  We returned via Hound Tor and Cold East Cross.

Friday 14 May

Evening Ride (BF): Holne

6 Present: Neil Ault, Jeremy Ford, Phillip Harler, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Eliot Wright

Weather: cold, strong breeze

Our special dispensation from the management of River Dart Country Park is still effective, so we rode through the grounds, stopping momentarily to try out the new tubular slide adjacent to the Anaconda Run.  Return was via Holne.

Sunday 16 May

Day Ride: Slapton Sands

2 Present: Neil Ault, Michael Jones

Weather: very wet

There was little enthusiasm for a ride in today's appalling weather, so the ride was abandoned.

Friday 21 May

Evening Ride (BF): Crofters

3 Present: Neil Ault, Phillip Harler, Michael Jones

Weather: very wet

Once again the ride was abandoned, although today Michael offered an alternative Computer Games social at Crofters.  At least the reservoirs should be well filled for the summer!

Sunday 23 May

Day Ride: Rough Stuff Event

13 Present: Peter Bonnet (9, new), Tao Burgess, Phillip Harler, Thain Hatherly, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Gavin Taylor, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker, Ben Widger

Returning to Buckfastleigh after the event

The Rough Stuff event is a rough riding competition organised for the benefit of all CTC groups in Devon.  The start this year was near Landscove, and the weather seemed set for a perfect day despite the forecast of rain.

The only problem (for some of us, anyway) was that many weeks of rain had left most of the tracks in the area extremely muddy.  The route was acceptable until we reached the track from Baddaford Farm to Lower Combe.  Half way along we discovered a huge sea of mud that stretched from one side of the lane to the other and was more than twenty paces long.  We carefully picked our way through, but Peter quickly became stuck.  Michael had to struggle past him with his own bike, then come back and take Peter's bike.  By this time he was a little muddier than usual, but still Peter was stuck.  He had to return again to lift Peter out of the mud, but even that was not the end of the matter - his shoes steadfastly refused to come with him!  A further journey had to be made to recover the shoes, by which time Peter, Michael and the shoes were plastered in thick, gooey mud.

Congratulations to Gavin Taylor, who was judged first junior rider.  Thanks to Arthur Browne of Exeter for organising the event, and his wife for bringing along drinks and home-made buns.

Friday 28 May

Evening Ride (BF): Staverton

6 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Richard Burge, Julian Duquemin, Phillip Harler, Michael Jones

Weather: warm & sunny

The weather was perfect for this easy ride along Colston road to Staverton Bridge.  The temptation of the riverside track to the village was, as usual, irresistible.

Sunday 30 May

Day Ride: Petre's Cross

2 Present: Neil Ault, Michael Jones

Weather: very wet

Further unsettled weather forced cancellation of our classic moorland track ride.

Friday 4 June

Evening Ride (BF): Hembury Woods

10 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Richard Burge, Julian Duquemin, Jeremy Ford, Matthew Hamlyn-White, Phillip Harler, Matthew Jeffery, Michael Jones, Eliot Wright

Weather: overcast but warm

Peter was struggling as we climbed through Hembury Woods, but the track descent to Holne Bridge was more  enjoyable for him, despite the very muddy sections at the bottom.  Julian and Richard, it seemed, made the right decision to take the road alternative on this occasion.

Sunday 6 June

Our two new members joined us today after a chance meeting at the end of Friday's evening ride.  We met up with our Paignton and Totnes contingents at Broadhempston, spent some time playing in the park and then took up Julie's suggestion of trying a new cafe at Landscove.  The staff were very busy today, but allowed us to serve ourselves on the magnificent lawns with cans of drink and cups of tea.  Two dogs seemed eager to fetch balls and sticks for our youngsters despite the excessive heat.

During the return to Buckfastleigh, Paul took a detour around Lower Combe and then decided to try a track that took his fancy.  He forgot that the rest of us were waiting for him.  Tao kindly cycled around the hilly detour in his attempts to locate him, but eventually we gave up and went home.  In fact Paul had tried the Baddaford track (mentioned under the Rough Stuff report), discovered the mud and then beaten a hasty retreat.

Friday 11 June

Evening Ride (BF): Hembury Woods

6 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Jeremy Ford, Michael Jones, Chris Platt, Eliot Wright

Weather: damp

An almost unanimous vote decided that the ride should be cancelled (in view of the poor weather) and replaced by another Computer Games social at Crofters.  The new five-player game, Dynablasters, proved immensely popular.

Sunday 13 June

Day Ride: Pixie's Cave

13 Present: James Allason, Tao Burgess, Dave Humphreys, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, David Robinson, Dominic Robinson, Bob Taylor, Gary Taylor, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Tom Widger

Weather: warm and sunny

We were pleased to welcome Dave Humphreys back to the fold after a short spell in France, and Dave Robinson and his son Dominic after an absence that's difficult to explain.

The ride to Dartmeet was made somewhat arduous by the excessive heat, so we paused for lunch in a shady glade near Poundsgate before moving on to the Badgers Holt cafe for further refreshments.

There was little enthusiasm from the Paignton contingent for exploring the cave, so Michael led Tao, Alex and Tom on the half-hour detour while the others set off for home.  Tom's puncture put an end to our hopes of catching them: it's hard to believe, but he didn't have a spare tube or a puncture repair kit!

Peter was joining us this weekend, so Michael took him and Neil to Holne by car before the start of the ride.  He did very well, and they had been waiting for more than half an hour when we finally met up with them near Huccaby Bridge.

The weather wasn't quite as warm as last year, but we were still able to enjoy throwing a Frisbee across the river.  Inevitably some youngsters managed to get themselves soaked, but I suppose that's all part of the fun.

Once the dubious hostel meal had been consumed the rest of the evening was spent making a silly, three-minute horror movie about a boy being chased through the forest by an unseen monster.  It was fun to make; you can judge for yourself whether it is fun to watch if you come to the Christmas Special social.

Sunday morning saw the beginning of the heat wave.  We didn't feel too energetic, so we contented ourselves with riding the few miles to Princetown for a view of the prison and some hot chocolate and toasted tea cakes at the Foxtor cafe.  The budgies, which have been on show in their huge cage at the back of the cafe for as long as anyone can remember, looked particularly attractive in the morning sunshine.

We could have ridden the long way home, via Cornwood and Ivybridge, but we fancied lunch by a moorland river so we rode homewards and stopped at Dunnabridge, near Hexworthy.  We were all stung and scratched as we scrambled down the bank to the footpath, but the hour spent walking across the stepping stones was well worth the effort.

Friday 25 June

Evening Ride (BF): Staverton

7 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Peter Furneaux, Phillip Harler, Michael Jones, Philip Stone, Eliot Wright

Weather: very hot & sunny

Another perfect evening ride took us along Colston Road to Staverton Bridge, along the riverside path (now somewhat overgrown) and homewards via Landscove.

Sunday 27 June

Day Ride: Elender Cove

11 Present: Neil Ault, Dave Humphreys, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Stone, Bob Taylor, Gary Taylor, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker, Tom Widger

Weather: very hot & sunny

The ride to Elender Cove is always tough, but today's excessive heat made it especially arduous.  It was early afternoon when we finally arrived at East Prawle and descended the hill to the Elender Cove track.

To our disappointment the main track was blocked by a huge lake of muddy water that stretched from one hedge to the other.  First Robert tried to ride through, but he quickly found himself in deep water.  Michael then tried edging along the bank, pushing his bike through the water while the rest watched with interest from a safe distance.  When he reached the half-way point the mud gave way and he found himself standing in a disgusting soup of mud and aquatic wildlife:  the sight of Michael with muddy paws is somewhat unusual to say the least, so there was a good deal of merriment from the onlookers.

Charlie, James, Dave and Bob quickly decided that the village would be a safer place to enjoy lunch.  The others found a way through an adjacent field and so avoided the bog completely.  We still had to contend with the brambles, gorse and nettles that smothered the tiny path down to the cove, but the lunchtime views across the bay made it all worthwhile.

When the cove had been explored and Michael had washed his shoes, socks and feet in a rocky pool, we fought our way back to the village, bought refreshments from the Piglet Stores and attempted to rouse Dave and company who were sunbathing on the village green.

Buckfastleigh starters finally got home at about 6.45pm.  Philip had chosen a tough ride for his first full-day excursion, but he coped very well indeed.

Friday 2 July

Evening Ride (BF): Hembury Woods

10 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Peter Furneaux, Matthew Hamlyn-White, Phillip Harler, Michael Jones (new, A), Michael Jones, Nick Radmore, Philip Stone, Eliot Wright

Weather: sunny

There must be several Michael Jones' in Devon, but it is unusual for two to attend one of our club rides!  The new Michael originates from Bittaford.

Our ride took us first to the River Dart Country Park, where the Anaconda Run and its new big brother provided the youngsters with plenty of entertainment.  We then made our way back to Hembury Woods by climbing the track from Holne Chase, usually best negotiated the other way around.

Sunday 4 July

Afternoon ride: Sigford

4 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware

Weather: hot & sunny

In view of the surprisingly low turnout we shortened the ride a little and contented ourselves with Whiddon Farm tracks and a return through Ashburton.

Friday 9 July

Evening Ride (BF): Landscove Tracks

5 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Stone

Weather: showery & cold

The footpath from Baddaford to Landscove passes through two green fields.  Today they were occupied by a herd of inquisitive cows, but Neil, Philip and Paul were convinced they had hostile intentions and sped off towards the gate, shouting at the poor creatures for all they were worth.  Michael, the original Dr Doolittle, spoke to the cows to calm them down before catching up with the others.

We returned to Buckfastleigh via Colston Road.

Sunday 11 July

Day Ride: Blackingstone Rock (41m)

10 Present: James Allason, Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Peter Furneaux, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Philip Stone, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker

Weather: mainly dry & sunny

From the Chudleigh pick-up we rode to Blackingstone Rock via Canonteign Falls and the steep climb to the reservoirs.  After enjoying lunch with some excellent views we visited the Primrose Cafe at Lustleigh and returned via the old railway track to Bovey Tracey and home.

Friday 16 July

Evening Ride (BF): Galant Le Bower

4 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Furneaux, Michael Jones, Nick Radmore

Weather: sunny and warm

There was some indecision when we reached Galant le Bower: Peter and Neil wanted to take the track to Holne Bridge but Michael and Nick thought it would be too muddy, preferring a return via Holne.  After much deliberation we did the track, and found it just as muddy as Michael had predicted.  It was still fun though.

The homeward route took us through the River Dart Country Park.

Frisbee fun at East Portlemouth

The weather was perfect for our ride to Salcombe.  We arrived in plenty of time for supper, and this year we were given a dormitory overlooking the sea.  The usual walk along the coastal path to Starehole Bay provided much entertainment.

When Sunday dawned the rain was pouring from the heavens.  Michael obtained the BBC Radio Devon weather forecast by ringing home at 9.30 and having the receiver placed near the radio.  Things were predicted to brighten up during the afternoon, but we would never get home if we waited at Salcombe until then.  There was no choice: we had to ride.

The ferry to East Portlemouth is a small boat that can just manage five bikes and riders at a time.  When the first group had crossed they made good use of the open-air cafe overlooking the beach while the ferryman went back for the second load.  It was during a subsequent dash to the beach that Neil slipped on the green wood of the jetty, landed on the sand two metres below and cracked two ribs.  He was in considerable pain for a while, but was able to continue with the ride after a lengthy rest.

The thought of the warm cafe at Slapton kept us well motivated for the next hour or two.  When we arrived, however, the cafe was filled to capacity and the rain was still as cold and heavy as ever.  We made the best of the take-away counter and set off homewards as soon as possible.

The rain finally stopped as we neared Diptford:  we were already wet so we didn't deviate from our homeward course.

Friday 23 July

Evening Ride (BF): Staverton

6 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Furneaux, Matthew Hamlyn-White, Ken Oakley, Paul Oakley, Philip Oakley

Weather: slight drizzle

Michael was recovering from a summer cold this evening, and with a major tour looming in 13 days he decided not to take part in the ride.  Ken Oakley led the small band via Colston Road to Staverton and along the riverside path, where a local resident spoiled their fun by asking them not to ride on the path.

Sunday 25 July

Day Ride: Thurlestone Beach

9 Present: James Allason, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Philip Stone, Ben Widger, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: showery

Michael chickened out again today in view of the weather and his cold.  The rest of the group decided to shorten the ride, and rode to the Copper Kettle cafe at South Brent instead of Thurlestone.  Returning to Buckfastleigh at lunchtime they invaded Crofters for a social, evidently preferring computer games to cycling in the rain.

Friday 30 July

Evening Ride (BF): Lambsdown

5 Present: Neil Ault, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Philip Stone

Weather: fine but breezy

Peter took his time on the climb but eventually we were on the open moor and heading for Cross Furzes.  The usual people played with the water at the ford, and the usual people got wet!

Sunday 1 August

Afternoon ride: Mount Barton

13 Present: Richard Adams, Peter Bonnet, Tao Burgess, Harry Hall, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Philip Oakley, Chris Platt, Bill Tuft (A, new), Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker

Weather: sunny spells

Confusion reigned again as Michael's Buckfastleigh and Totnes group waited at Mount Barton farm and Charlie's Paignton contingent waited at the cross roads around the corner.  It was twelve minutes before Michael decided to investigate and the two groups met up!

We were close to Landscove, so the vicarage cafe seemed the obvious destination.  Once again we were given a tray of drinks and allowed to serve ourselves on the lawn while the youngsters got the two dogs to run around the grounds after various rubber bone-shaped objects.

Friday 20 August

Evening Ride (BF): Staverton

8 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Burge, Jeremy Ford, Matthew Jeffery, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Oakley, Philip Stone,

Weather: warm and balmy

After riding up Green Lane we decided to take the track to Staverton, and found the scenery spoilt by some 'travellers' who had settled in the lane with their ramshackle vans.  We continued to Staverton and returned via Colston.

Sunday 22 August

Day Ride: Fernworthy Reservoir

12 Present: Helen Adams (19, new), Richard Adams, Richard Burge, Michael Jones, Keir Manning, Paul Oakley, Philip Stone, Bob Taylor, Bill Tuft, Robert Walker, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: cloudy but dry, cool

This was an excellent ride, taking in the best of the moorland scenery.  It was a little cold when we sat down by the reservoir for lunch, so we didn't stay long.

At Green Combe, the road climbs to a junction with the main road and then doubles back to the left, opening up the possibility of a short cut across a stretch of moorland.  Robert decided to try it, but he ran into some boggy ground in the middle and was still picking his way through as the rest of us sailed past on the road.

Return was via the long descent from Shapley Common to Widecombe.  We tried the Green cafe (after Dave Robinson's recommendation), but when we still hadn't been served twelve minutes after sitting down we decided to move across to the Wayside cafe.

Friday 27 August

Evening Ride (BF): Hembury Woods

6 Present: Peter Bonnet, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Stone, John Stuart, Eliot Wright

Weather: perfect

Hembury Woods was selected again - for some reason the younger riders seem to like the track descent from the fort which they have named 'The Slalom'.  John Stuart wasn't sure about it, but gave it a good try.

Sunday 29 August

Day Ride: Slapton Sands (40m)

14 Present: Helen Adams, Richard Adams, James Allason, Neil Ault, Michael Jones, Ben Nute (J, new), Paul Oakley, Philip Stone, Bob Taylor, Gary Taylor, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Ben Widger, Tom Widger

Weather: warm and sunny

This was a straightforward ride, but tiring nevertheless.  The hard work seemed well worthwhile as we lay on the quiet beach in the sunshine.  When most people had either been buried in pebbles or had pebbles piled inside their shirts we set off for home via Strete and Tuckenhay, stopping off at Forces Cross for light refreshments.

Friday 3 September

Evening Ride (BF): Avon Dam

7 Present: Neil Ault, Peter Bonnet, Julian Duquemin, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Stone, Eliot Wright

Weather: perfect evening

Our famous Moorland Special took us once more past Shipley Bridge to the Avon Dam, which was full to overflowing.  It was getting dark as we began the trek across the moor to Water Oak Corner, and there was a moment of concern while Michael did his best to find the post that marked the Abbots Way.  We were soon on the right track again, rolling down across the fields with lights blazing.

Sunday 5 September

Afternoon ride: Chalk Ford

10 Present: Richard Adams, Peter Bonnet, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Ben Nute, Paul Oakley, Ben Widger, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: fine and sunny

At Cross Furzes we discovered two groups of adults in two cars, conversing and looking lost.  It seemed they were trying to get to Cross Furzes where they hoped to be able to gain easy access to some real moorland scenery.  Michael explained that they were at Cross Furzes and pointed to the moorland scenery they were planning to visit.  When they saw it they decided that it wasn't moorish enough and set off to explore elsewhere.  They overtook us up the track to Lud Gate without asking any further advice, and of course discovered that it turned into a stony track.  When we reached them they were having another conference and didn't think they needed any more help thankyou!  We left them to it and enjoyed the real moorland descent to Chalk Ford.

As usual there was a mad race down the rough track into Scorriton, and as usual the high speed resulted in a puncture - Ben on this occasion.  Will they ever learn?  I don't think so!

Friday 10 September

Evening Ride (BF): Chuley Cross

6 Present: Neil Ault, Julian Duquemin, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Oakley, Philip Stone

Weather: dry but chilly

A short ride took us to Landscove via green Lane and then homewards by way of Chuley Cross and Pridhamsleigh.

Sunday 12 September

Day Ride: Exeter Ship Canal

0 Present:

Weather: very wet

Today's ride was cancelled as a result of the extremely bad weather.

Friday 17 September

Evening Ride (BF): Holne

8 Present: Neil Ault, Julian Duquemin, Matthew Jeffery, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Oakley, Philip Stone, Eliot Wright

Weather: dry but cold

Yet another request for Hembury Woods brought us back to Hembury Fort in the near darkness.  It was a little difficult to negotiate the twisty track under these conditions, but Neil and others still tried to go fast.  The result was that Neil got a branch in the eye: fortunately no serious damage was sustained.

Saturday 18 September

Weekend Ride: Steps Bridge YH

This hostel weekend was cancelled as no bookings had been received by the latest booking date.

Friday 24 September

Evening Ride (BF): West Buckfastleigh

5 Present: Neil Ault, Matthew Hamlyn-White, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Philip Oakley

Weather: overcast with showers

Michael had great plans for the last evening ride of the season - and so, it seems, did the other riders, although their plans had more to do with an early return to Crofters than riding to an interesting destination!

When we got to the lanes behind Buckfast the weather was looking more promising, so Michael suggested the climb to Cross Furzes.  He was totally outvoted by Matthew, Paul, Philip and Neil, and since Matthew had no lights Michael decided to give in and cut the ride short.

Sunday 26 September

Paul and Neil on the track to Owley

We last attempted this ride several years ago, so we were looking forward to the action with enthusiasm.  The ride to Cornwood was scenic but uneventful.  When we reached Torr, Charlie and Dave decided to take the road route home via Harford while the rest of us set off for the stony track to the Tinners' Hut.

We were intercepted at the start of the track by a local resident who seemed to feel it was his duty to interrogate everyone who was headed for the moor: I don't think he fully understands the purpose of national parks!  After trying to put us off for ten minutes he eventually realised that we were determined to go, and wished us well.

The track was excellent, our progress being impeded only by the occasional moorland pony that crossed the path.  We lunched in a delightful sheltered glade beside the river, and then continued slowly in search of a suitable crossing point.  We soon found a place with plenty of big boulders, and eventually we were across with only a few wet feet.

The climb to the track on the ridge was much harder, especially for the younger riders, so the fit ones came back and helped them with their bikes.  When we eventually found Tao (who had veered a little too far to the left during the climb) we followed the track for a few miles and then took the track descent to Owley.  Here again there was room for error, when the leading riders veered too far left and found themselves surrounded by waste-high bracken!  They persevered along their selected route, even though they could see the rest of us making much better progress on the path!

We had hoped to meet Charlie and Dave at the Copper Kettle at 4pm, but in fact it was closed for the day and Dave and Charlie were nowhere to be seen.  We made our separate ways home at the end of another excellent adventure.

Sunday 3 October

Afternoon ride: Torbryan

8 Present: Neil Ault, Mark Barber (J, new), Michael Jones, David Robinson, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Eliot Wright ..

Weather: dry start, drizzle later

Dave Robinson informed us at Torbryan that the previous owners of the Primrose cafe at Lustleigh had taken over an old pub near Ogwell and converted it to tearooms.  We saw a pub marked on the map near Ogwell and agreed that we should investigate.

On arrival at Denbury, the sky became overcast and Dave remembered something else about the place: it was near Caton!  Michael immediately thought of the Rising Sun Inn near Woodland, and decided to investigate it on the way home.

As we approached we noticed the old Rising Sun signs now showed Rising Sun Tearooms, so we felt sure we were on the right track.  Sure enough, there was Roger Olver himself serving teas and cakes from his new premises.  It was packed, as you might expect, and very tastefully designed inside.  The prices haven't gone down, but neither has our discount: I'm sure we'll be returning again!

Friday 8 October

Social: Annual General Meeting

1900-2200

9 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Burge, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Chris Platt, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Loraine Walker, Robert Walker

The meeting this year was a fairly quiet affair.  The only changes to the Section Committee were that Neil Ault became the treasurer and Seb Lessware became Publicity Officer and Section Delegate.

Publicity representatives were elected as follows:

   TOTNES                    Sebastian Lessware

   PAIGNTON                 Dave Robinson

   TORQUAY                  Dave Robinson

   NEWTON ABBOT       Tao Burgess

   ASHBURTON             Chris Platt

   BUCKFASTLEIGH      Eliot Wright

   SOUTH BRENT          Mark Hedges

Two motions were considered, all proposed by the Section Secretary:

A:  That the Section should return to Leusdon Lodge for the 1993 Christmas Lunch to see if the new owners will provide a satisfactory service.

There was general agreement that the Moorland Hotel had offered large portions of good food at a reasonable price, but that lack of a private room was a disadvantage.  The motion was carried.

B:  That a new publicity position be introduced to cover villages such as Ipplepen, Staverton, Broadhempston and Landscove.

The motion was amended as follows: That the Publicity Officer should ensure that posters are presented in all villages in the area as far as possible, either by making personal visits, requesting existing publicity officer to make visits, or posting leaflets and posters to known locations in the villages.

The amended motion was carried.  Michael agreed to make a few initial contacts.  Additional  villages discussed included Denbury, Ogwell, Kingskerswell, Bovey Tracey, Kingsteignton, Bickington and Chudleigh.

Other Business

1.   Lorraine Walker offered a pre-Christmas social at Paignton on 10 December.

2.   It was agreed that the pick-up time for Avonwick starts should be changed from 11.00 to 11.15 to allow more time for the Paignton and Totnes contingents to arrive.

3.   It was agreed that the survival blanket need not now be purchased and that Dave Robinson's £2 donation should therefore be returned with thanks.

4.   South area decided that it was sensible to put destinations on local rides, and Charlie agreed to send Michael a list of destinations for use in subsequent newsletters.

5.   South Area prefer morning rides to afternoon rides, so all South Area afternoon rides that do not meet up with North Area afternoon rides will be converted to morning rides with immediate effect.

6.   The drop in attendances were a cause for concern, and it was therefore agreed that every effort should be made by all members to recruit additional children and adults to the club as quickly as possible.

7.   Dave Humphreys agreed by telephone to lead one ride per month, and Dave Robinson and Charlie agreed that their names could be used on posters in their area.

Morning ride: Spitchwick

9 Present: Neil Ault, Mark Barber, Jeremy Mark's friend (10, new), Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Martin Luke, Paul Oakley, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: cold, sunny and calm

Martin Luke selected this perfect autumn morning to make a tentative comeback to club life.  We took in the best of the autumnal scenery by riding the track through Hembury Woods to Gallant Le Bower and New Bridge, and then riding (and pushing) the riverside path to Spitchwick.  It really is surprising how a path can seem totally different when traversed in the opposite direction!

When everyone had just begun to enjoy Spitchwick, Michael urged us onwards through the woodlands and up the steep climb to Buckland in the Moor.  There was a general desire to stop for refreshments, so we made our inaugural visit to the Round House cafe.  Paul had no money and Tom, confident that there would be no cafe stop today, had spent all his at the start of the ride.

Jeremy, who performed excellently on his first ride, reckoned the bakewell tart was excellent!

Friday 22 October

Social: Board Games

1900-2200

5 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Burge, Chris Giles, Michael Jones, Chris Platt

Risk was the selected board game this evening.  The winner was ... Budgie!

Sunday 24 October

Day Ride: Hansel Mill

11 Present: Neil Ault, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Mark Moxham, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Robert Walker, Tom Widger

Weather: cold, grey but dry

Totnes pick-up.  Out via Tuckenhay for a change, joined with Strete road then turned off for Hansel Mill.  Took a wrong turning during the descent and ended up in an overgrown glade infested with midges.  As we were too hungry to climb back up the hill before lunch we made the most of it as a lunch spot first.  Returned through Diptford.

Sunday 31 October

Day Ride: North Bovey

11 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Mark Moxham, Paul Oakley, John Stuart, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Ben Widger, Tom Widger

Friday 5 November

Social: Computer Games

1900-2200

3 Present: Neil Ault, Chris Giles, Michael Jones

The date being what it was, attendance was somewhat low this evening.  Chris Giles made full use of the computer games, however.

Saturday 6 November

Weekend Ride: Maypool YH

5 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Paul Oakley, Eliot Wright

Weather: grey / cold

Maypool was good fun as always, although the wardens were a little stingy with the food and a little sharp with the youngsters.  The firework display looked spectacular against the backdrop of the river Dart and the Dartmouth lights.

The younger members, who had been pressing Michael for months to tell them a really good ghost story at a hostel, didn’t get too good a reception for the one he told tonight - it had a rather disappointing ending!

On Sunday morning, when chores had been completed, we rode at high speed to Marldon to lead the local morning ride ...

Sunday 7 November

Morning ride (PT): Stover Country Park

7 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Philip Robinson, Eliot Wright

Weather: grey / cold

Seb and Phillip Robinson were waiting for us.  The ride took us through Compton, East Ogwell and Highweek to the fascinating paths and tracks of Stover Lake Country Park.  We enjoyed lunch by the lake and then sped off towards Buckfastleigh for the local afternoon ride ...

Sunday 7 November

Afternoon ride (BF): Skerraton Down

9 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Chris Giles, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Martin Luke, Paul Oakley, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: grey / cold

Another excellent ride across the moor.

Sunday 14 November

Day Ride: Exeter Ship Canal

5 Present: Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Ken Twydell, Paul Williams (11, new)

Weather: cold, windy, sunny spells

Nobody except Michael felt much like pressing on to the Ship Canal, so we opted for a shorter route that took us through some new lanes to Haldon, where we enjoyed lunch in a woodland glade.  Ken kept us entertained by talking continuously about bikes, but it was too cold to listen for long.

Doddiscombsleigh was the next stop - Seb quickly found the parish noticeboard and pinned up a club poster.  We concluded the ride with drinks at the nearby nursery, which gave Tao and Paul an opportunity to fix Paul’s puncture.  There then followed a brisk ride to Chudleigh and home.

Sunday 21 November

Morning ride (BF): North Huish

7 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Chris Platt, Ben Widger, Tom Widger

Weather: cold & frosty

Weather conditions today were distinctly wintry rather than autumnal.  The ride took us through Rattery and Diptford and up a steep hill to a gateway which overlooked the village of North Huish.  Tom commented that it looked cosy - and so it did!

We returned through Avonwick, taking in as many attractive lanes as we could find.

Sunday 28 November

Day Ride: Ringmore

2 Present: Tao Burgess, Michael Jones

Weather: cold, dull

Only Tao and Michael appeared at the Buckfastleigh start, so Michael had the bright idea of driving to the Avonwick pick-up in his car (the weather wasn’t really too pleasant).  When they had ridden up to Crofters, Michael realised his house was locked with the keys inside, so he couldn’t get the car keys out until his mother got home!  They set off for Avonwick on their bikes, and after taking a wrong turning eventually arrived at about 11.15.  Charlie and Andy were there in their car (without bikes), and while they were talking Michael discovered his car keys in his coat pocket!  Tao was not impressed.

Michael and Tao decided to cut the ride short and returned to Buckfastleigh.

Sunday 5 December

Afternoon ride: Rising Sun Tea-rooms

12 Present: Richard Burge, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, Ken Twydell, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Ben Widger, Tom Widger

Weather: cool, sunny spells

The new tea-rooms at Woodland made an excellent destination for today’s ride.  Ken, Charlie and Andy arrived in advance of the Buckfastleigh contingent and had already started on their refreshments by the time the others arrived.

The food was excellent as usual, and the 20% discount brought prices down to an acceptable level.

Sunday 12 December

Day Ride: Bridford

0 Present:

Weather: wet

The torrential rain ensured that nobody ventured out for today’s ride.

Friday 17 December

Social: Pre-Christmas Social

1900-2200

10 Present: Neil Ault, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, James Proctor (16, new), Julie Twydell, Ken Twydell, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Loraine Walker, Robert Walker

Lorraine had prepared a superb range of home-baked food for us.  Charlie showed us his piranha fish and some video scenes from his recent trip to the USA.  There was then time for a board game before the evening drew to a close.

Many thanks, Charlie and Lorraine, for all your efforts.

Sunday 19 December

Day Ride: Christmas Lunch

14 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Burge, Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Seb Lessware, Martin Luke, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, James Proctor, Andrew Walker, Charlie Walker, Ben Widger, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Weather: wet start, fine later

Some members decided that the weather was just too miserable to contemplate cycling to Ilsington for our annual Christmas Lunch ride, preferring instead to rely on motorised transport.

One of the benefits of choosing Ilsington is that there is a private indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, used by the health club.  Our members were allowed to use the facilities on payment of a modest fee - apparently the money was well spent!

The meal itself was acceptable although not up to home-baking standards.  There was a delay after the main course owing to a power failure, but the staff coped well under difficult circumstances.

Paul Oakley received the junior attendance trophy for 1992/93 and several other members received certificates for completing the Ten Tors event in October.

Monday 27 December

Morning ride: Littlehempston

8 Present: Richard Burge, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, James Proctor, Tom Widger, Bob Williams (A, new), Paul Williams

Weather: frosty & bright

This weather was perfect for this special Boxing Day morning ride.  The route was straightforward, taking us along the riverside path at Staverton and homeward through Broadhempston.

Wednesday 29 December

Social (BF): Christmas Social

11 Present: Neil Ault, Richard Burge, Julian Duquemin, Michael Jones, Alex Lessware, Seb Lessware, Paul Oakley, Chris Platt, James Proctor, Ben Widger, Tom Widger, Eliot Wright

Risk, hot vegetarian mince pies, computer games and some video presentations made this a thoroughly enjoyable social to conclude the Christmas festivities.
