Somerset 2010
Scotland 2010

We've written some brief descriptions of some of our recent rides.  If you haven't ridden with us before, it will give you an idea of what we get up to.  If you're a regular member it will remind you of just how much fun you had!

Sunday 28 November 2010 Morning Ride: - 1015-1300
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Very cold (1°)
It was so cold this morning that nobody felt like going out.  We played Lord of the Rings for an hour to see if things would warm up, and when they didn't we went to Ashburton for an hour of badminton - which gave Callum a chance to try out his new racquet!

Friday 26 November 2010 Social: Games evening 1900-2200
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones

Our plans to play badminton this evening came to nothing once again as there was not a single court free anywhere in South Devon!  We organised some very enjoyable team games on the computers instead and had a great evening.

Sunday 21 November 2010 Morning Ride: Belford Mill 1015-1250
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell Weather: Dry but cold

Jack, Ash and Callum enjoying the woodland track near Belford Mill

A cold breeze meant we had to dress up warmly for this morning ride to Ashburton.  There were plenty of autumn leaves lining the woodland track near Belford Mill but the glorious colours of two weeks ago were beginning to fade now.  Our return route took us past South Dartmoor school, around one of Michael's "educational" detours in the centre of Ashburton and home via Peartree.

Friday 19 November 2010 Social: Bowling and Pool 1900-2200
3 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones

Callum loves bowling and Michael needed to call in to the Vue cinema about some ticket refunds, so a visit to Plymouth seemed the ideal social this evening.  Ash surprised everyone and himself by winning the bowling with a score of just 108, and he even beat Michael and Callum at Pool as well!

Sunday 14 November 2010 Morning Ride: 1015-1300
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Wet
Unfriendly weather conditions prompted us to share our morning between computer games and badminton.

Friday 12 November 2010 Social: Charades & Music Quiz 1900-2200
5 Present: Julian Duquemin, Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

It was good to see Julian this evening, visiting his friends in Devon for the weekend.  Zac had his foot in plaster and Julian didn't have his sports clothing so Callum's suggestion of badminton was always going to be a non-starter.  Instead we had a very enjoyable evening playing games at Crofters.  Most of the time was spent on Charades, where Julian's attempts to mime the movie Madagascar came to nothing when everyone totally failed to get his mime for "Mad" and failed to realise that his mime for "Petrol" was supposed to mean "gas"!  He did get them to guess "car" but sadly that wasn't enough for them to have any clue what movie he was talking about.  Ash came first and Julian came a close second.

Next up was a short music quiz where Zac seemed unfamiliar with almost every genre of music Michael came up with.  Julian and Callum were the clear winners here, but everyone had fun.  We concluded a great evening with a team game on Call of Duty, where Julian and Zac's ploy of closing the door to their room so they could discuss tactics in private failed to make any noticeable difference to the magnitude of their trouncing!

Sunday 7 November 2010 Morning Ride: Totnes 1015-1335
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell Weather: Fine and sunny

Jack and Ash on the Totnes cycle path

Jack and Ash on the Totnes cycle path

Fabulous autumn leaves adorned our route along Colston Road and along the cycle path to Dartington.  Today we were able to continue along the riverside path to Totnes where even more spectacular colours awaited us.  This really did turn out to be a fabulous cycle ride.

We haven't visited the Barrel House cafe for a long time, and today it proved just as welcoming as ever with an open fire burning just inside the door and comfortable sofas arranged conveniently nearby.  The hot chocolates and teacakes were excellent and we really didn't feel like leaving.

Our return route along Barracks Hill took us down memory lane for Jack who had lived in Dartington when he was younger and had frequently visited his gran at Week.  The farm lanes took us quickly to the hill up to the sawmills and we returned to Buckfastleigh via the Pennywell downhill .

Friday 5 November 2010 Social: Fireworks 1900-2200
4 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones

Impressive fireworks at Plymouth

With our social falling on Bonfire Night this year it seemed clear what we would be doing, but it took a little while to decide which event to attend.  In the end we headed for Mountbatten in Plymouth which offered us an excellent view of the firework display coming out of the Citadel on the Hoe.  Ash took his camera and managed to get some spectacular long-exposure shots of the display, and we all bought some ice-cream boats coated with chocolate and fudge from the ice cream van.

We called in to Tesco on the way home and still had time for a game of Call of Duty when we got back to the Clubroom.

Sunday 31 October 2010 Morning Ride: South Brent 1015-1215
6 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Jack Parnell Weather: Cloudy start, rain later

A wet visit to South Brent playpark

With a rather unsettled outlook we set off up Dean hill and followed through to Harbourneford, planning to turn back at the first sign of rain.  Unfortunately the leading riders neglected to wait before descending the hill to South Brent, so Michael was unable to warn them that the small drops of rain that had begun to fall were a sure sign of worse to come.

Since we were in the village we bought some refreshments from the coop and ate them under the shelter of the shop front, but by now the rain was settling in for the morning so there was nothing for it but to head for home as quickly as we could.  Zac and Jack had no coats and Zac and Ryan were wearing jeans, so by the time we had taken the main road back to Marley Head and then cut back to Dean hill for the final descent they were thoroughly drenched.  They didn't seem to mind, although they were very grateful for the warm fire and computer games on offer at the clubroom after the ride.

Friday 29 October 2010 Social: Games evening 1900-2200
4 Present: Josh Davey (12, new), Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones

Josh was given special permission to come to this evening's social as he was keen to join the cycling club, but this didn't prove too productive as he hadn't realised the cycle rides were on Sundays and conflicted with activities in his other sports club.  Nevertheless we spent a very enjoyable evening playing team games of Call of Duty and introducing Josh to the Lord of the Rings PC game.

Sunday 24 October 2010 Morning Ride: Chalk Ford 1015-1315
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Sunny with blue skies but chilly

Callum & Ash on the moor near Chalk Ford

After some debate we settled on Chalk Ford as our destination today, tackling the climb to Cross Furzes fairly rapidly.  The moorland grass on the downhill to the destination was damp but not too slippery.  We searched in vain for any sign of the family of piglets that we had seen during the summer, but sadly they were all gone - we didn't really want to think too much about where!

With time to spare we detoured through Michelcombe to Holne where we paid a final visit to the local shop and cafe that will be closing next weekend - the coffee cake and hot chocolates were most welcome, but Michael didn't get on to well with the multitude of enormous dogs that came in with two other customers during our stay.  We returned home via Hembury hill, once again missing our favourite Slalom track in order to get home close to 1pm.

Friday 22 October 2010 Social: Bowling 1900-2200
3 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones

Callum really wanted to do ten-pin bowling this evening so we booked two games at Plymouth for the usual high Friday night prices.  Michael came out first in both games with Ash taking it in turns for second place.  After a little time on the arcade games we called back to Tesco Lee Mill for some snack purchases and a browse of the recent games releases.

Sunday 17 October 2010 Day ride: Widecombe-in-the-Moor 1015-1615
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell Weather: Perfect sunny weather

The downhill trach near Deadman's Corner

Today's perfect weather was just too good to waste on a morning ride, and as we were long overdue for a Dartmoor ride we headed up to Cold East Cross via Ashburton and Ausewell hill.

First stop was Bonehill rocks, one of the many Devon locations used by Steven Spielberg in his recent shooting of the film War Horse.  The youngsters spent 25 minutes climbing the rocks and looking for letterboxes before we descended the hill to Widecombe for a welcome refreshment stop in the Cafe on the Green.

Jack and Callum bought extra drinks from the shop near the village green and after soaking up the tranquil village scene we took the road to Ponsworthy with its steep descent to Ponsworthy bridge.

Now came decision time: we could take the easier route home via Leusdon and Spitchwick, or tackle an extra climb for the reward of Dr Blackall's drive.  Michael was very impressed when the youngsters chose the more adventurous option, and we were soon chatting with a pair of interesting cyclists from London on the climb through Lock's Gate Cross.

We pumped our tyres at the car park at Bel Tor Corner: Callum refused to accept that the reason for Michael's new pump falling apart was anything to do with the way he had been using it!  After the initial rough section of the track we quickly found ourselves looking over some of the most spectacular views in Devon and thoroughly enjoyed the track as it wound its way along the upper edge of the Dart valley.  As usual we took the track descent to New Bridge: it was a little overgrown today but we still managed to have a lot of fun negotiating the twists and turns.

At New Bridge car park we chatted briefly with South Hams CTC while enoying ice creams from the van, then returned home via Hembury Woods which concluded one of the best rides so far this season.

Friday 15 October 2010 Social: Badminton 1900-2200
5 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

We managed to find two badminton courts free this evening, but only at Combeshead school at Newton Abbot, and only from 9pm until 10pm.  We played various computer games in the clubroom first, then set off for Newton and had some great games of badminton - some of our members are showing definite signs of improvement.  The only downside was that the three without racquets were charged £1.40 hire fee each on top of the court costs, so we may have to give Combeshead a miss until we all have our own racquets.

Sunday 10 October 2010 Morning Ride:Staverton 1015-1255
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell Weather: Grey start, sunny later

Ash and Jack on the lane from Staverton to Abham

We were a little late starting today as Jack forgot to ring to let us know he was coming on the ride.  We set off as soon as we could for a leisurely jaunt along Colston Road to Staverton Bridge and the riverside track. In the park Jack was telling us how he loves pushing his younger brothers as high as possible on the bucket swing as they really don't like it, but we soon discovered that Jack doesn't like it either!

We returned to Buckfastleigh via Abham.

Friday 8 October 2010 Social: Pool 1900-2200
4 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones

We had to change our plans again this evening: when we arrived at the Tenpin bowling centre in Plymouth we discovered that all the lanes were booked out until 10pm.  Well we all enjoy Pool, so we decided to do that instead.  Two of the tables we chose decided to eat our money without giving us a game, but once that had been sorted by the staff we had several good games on two adjacent tables.  Tesco provided refreshments on the way back, then we finished with a game of Call of Duty on the PC network.

Sunday 3 October 2010 Morning Ride: River Dart Adventures 1015-1240
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell (15, new) Weather: Dry & breezy with sunny spells

Jack and Ash in Holne Woods

Last night's forecast of heavy rain all night and continuing until late afternoon proved somewhat inaccurate: it certainly rained all night, but everything had cleared through by the time our ride started.  New rider Jack, who had already ridden out from Staverton, had no difficulty with our ride this morning which started by riding along the lower Hembury track.  The Holy Brook was in full flow today but there seemed to be nearly as much water running down the track as well!

From Gallant Le Bower we rode down the track through Holne Woods past the newly-felled timber and on through River Dart Adventures where all the campers had finally gone home.

Friday 1 October 2010 Social: Computer games 1900-2200
4 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

Our plans to kick off our new social season with some badminton came to nothing when Michael found that there were no free courts anywhere in south Devon.  When Squash was also unavailable we played a grand game of Lord of the Rings on the PC network, took a trip to Lee Mill so the youngsters could buy some good value snacks and then returned for a little Call of Duty.

Sunday 26 September 2010 Car-assisted morning Ride: Hennock reservoirs 1015-1330
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Sunny with an autumnal chill

Trenchford reservoir

After some deliberation we settled on Hennock Reservoirs as the destination for this car-assisted morning ride.  On arrival we rode the tracks around the Trenchford reservoir, noting that its water level was significantly below maximum.  Going around the Tottiford however the reservoir seemed to be only half full.  The rear portion of the reservoir, which is at a higher level, was completely drained and there was evidence of several stone artifacts exposed by the absence of water.  We found out later that South West water had drained the reservoir last autumn for maintenance and that the foundations of ancient buildings had been uncovered as a result.  Time Team even came to investigate in August, and programme being broadcast at some point in 2011.  We just enjoyed the sunshine and the unusual opportunity to walk on the now grassy bottom of the reservoir.

The ride had been delightful but had also been rather short, so we finished with a spin down the hill to the village of Lustleigh where we were able to confirm that the cafe is still doing business.

Friday 24 September 2010 Evening Ride: Skerraton Down 1900-2050
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Sunny but chilly
Our last evening ride of the season had to be something a little special, so armed with good lights we headed up through Dean to Skerraton farm and then joined the track that leads up to the open moor.  It was still not totally dark as we made our way up through the burnt gorse.  Halfway up Michael realised his pump had fallen off during the climb, probably a result of being caught in some gorse stalks, but there seemed little point in looking for it in the dark.

At the top we were rewarded with views of myriads of twinkling lights spread across the whole of South Devon.  We stayed there chatting and taking photos until we got too cold, then enjoyed the descent across the moor to Cross Furzes and home.

Sunday 19 September 2010 Morning Ride: Landscove cafe 1015-1245
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Grey but dry

Callum & Ash on the bridlepath from Penn Farm

For this morning's ride we headed up Green lane and then took the track down towards Abham that now seems to have been adopted as home by a group of travellers.  Skirting back around to Landscove we settled on one of the new outdoor tables at the garden centre cafe and enjoyed verious tasty refreshements - the slab of coffee cake was easily big enough for two!

Our return route was up the hill to Penn farm, down the field path that today was heavily occupied by cows and then through the downhill woodland track that returned us eventually to Green Lane and home.

Friday 17 September 2010 Evening Ride: Holne Woods 1900-2050
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Sunny but chilly
This excellent evening ride started with a ride along the old road to Ashburton, then when we found the park was busy we headed back through River Dart Adventures where there were still a surprisingly large number of campers.  We then headed up the track from the back through Holne woods as darkness fell, needing our lights on full beams to navigate our way through the spooky darkness.  An owl kept us company in the stillness, making the whole experience somewhat surreal.

We returned through Hembury.  AS it was Zac's birthday tomorrow Michael had bought a chocolate birthday cake before the ride for us all to share when we got back.  Sadly Zac chose to pursue other activities this evening, but we still celebrated his birthday by finishing half the cake!

Sunday 12 September 2010 Morning Ride: Staverton 1015-1250
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Sunny
Zac had sore knees, Ash had sore knees and Callum had sore legs, but at least we managed to do a ride this week!  We rode along Colston road, stopping briefly to chat with Michael's relative at Colston farm, then continued up the cycle path to Huxham's Cross.  A new sign pointed down the hill to "Staverton Bridge Nursery" but our plans to check it out for a possible cafe didn't materialise: we got to the bridge and were looking everywhere, only to be told after a while that we had passed it on the way down the hill!

The riverside path was delightful today in the sunshine, although Michael felt a bit stupid riding Callum's little bike when he suggested a bike swap.  After enjoying a chocolate break in the play park we headed back to Buckfastleigh via Abham and Caddaford.

Friday 10 September 2010 Evening Ride: - 1900-2200
Nobody except Michael was available for today's ride, so it was cancelled.

Sunday 5 September 2010 Morning Ride: - 1015-1400
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Light rain
Poor weather again persuaded us to switch to a social today.  WE watched the first part of Michael's video of the Scotland tour and played several network PC games.

Friday 3 September 2010 Evening Ride: - 1900-2200
6 Present: Julian Duquemin, Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: -
Not surprisingly, everyone was quite tired after our jaunt around Scotland, and since it was Callum's birthday on Sunday he had requested a ten-pin bowling social tonight.  Everyone agreed, and with Julian make an unexpected return visit to club activities we headed off to Plymouth.  We hired two lanes so we could play two games of three people each in parallel.  Ash was stunned and overjoyed in equal parts to achieve his highest ever score of 152, but everyone very much enjoyed the games.  As usual we called in to Tesco on the way home for snacks.

Sunday 22 August 2010 Morning Ride: - 1050-1400
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: -
With our Scotland tour starting tomorrow we had made the decision some time ago that today's morning ride would be replaced by a social.  We spent the morning playing various computer games and said farewell at 2pm - until tomorrow afternoon!

Friday 20 August 2010 Evening Ride: - 1900-2200
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones Weather: Rain
Heavy rain put an end to all hopes of cycling on our last ride before the tour.  A social was organised instead, starting with computer games at Crofters and ending with several games of Pool at Plymouth.  We called into Tesco as usual on the way home to buy some snacks, and even had time for some more games when we got back to Buckfastleigh.

Sunday 15 August 2010 Morning Ride: Rattery 1050-1150
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Perfect sunny morning
Michael was still bikeless and the youngsters for seemed to want to save their energy for the tour, so he led by car a short ride up Dean hill, over to Rattery and back to Buckfastleigh via Pennywell Farm.

Friday 13 August 2010 Evening Ride: Landscove 1900-2055
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Sunny & warm
Michael's Mercian was still halfway through its service so he accompanied the youngsters with a support car this evening on our ride up Green Lane and past Baddaford.  He had to take the alternative road route as the cyclists descended the track across the fields to Landscove, but we all met up in the school playing field where the frisbee flew well and everyone learned that the one thing Ryan hates more than anything else is getting bits of grass in his "afro" hair - apparently it takes ages to get it all out!

Zac had a new bike this evening - an enormous Gary Fisher hybrid - bought for our forthcoming tour, and he certainly seemed to make good speed on it.  We returned via Abham.

Sunday 8 August 2010 Morning Ride: River Dart Adventures 1045-1245
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Sunny spells with light cloud

Ash & Callum on the old Ashburton railway

Today's ride took us through Buckfast to the lower Hembury Woods track that runs alongside the Holy Brook.  The marquee, tents and cars that we had seen in the field last year were back again - Michael later found out it was the BuddahDharmaSangha summer camp and that a number of other camps are run on the same site over the summer.  Callum had a few problems with his bottom bracket coming loose on his new bike.

After emerging from the woods we took the track through Holne Woods to River Dart Adventures, which was packed with visitors as one would expect in peak season.  At Ashburton we had time to take the old railway track to the park so that Ash and Callum could play on the jumps for ten minutes before we headed back along the old road to Buckasftleigh.

Friday 6 August 2010 Evening Ride: Spitchwick 1900-2122
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones Weather: Mainly sunny

Callum, Ash & Ryan at Spitchwick

Tonight seemed like a good night to visit Spitchwick, and there were certainly no arguments from the lads as it is always a popular destination.  We got there for around 8pm and found absolutely nobody there.  Everyone went into the cool evening waters of the Dart but only the three youngsters went all the way in, having a great time splashing around.  A couple of groups of visitors came along while we were in there, including a couple with a young lad who just had to go paddling when he saw us in the water.

In view of the rapidly fading light we had to return along the same route as our outward journey, via Hembury Woods.

Sunday 1 August 2010 Morning Ride: Chalk Ford 1015-1300
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Hallam Iles, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Cloudy with light rain later

Hallam, Ryan and the piglets

Zac, Ash, Hallam and Ryan

Admiring the piglets near Chalk Ford

Ryan was still suffering from knee pains after his recent activity week, so once again we found ourselves limiting the ride length.  We climbed Wallaford road to Cross Furzes in record time today and quickly reached the open moor at Lud Gate.  Everyone enjoyed the downhill to Chalk Ford, but we were particularly looking forward to seeing what had happened to the piglets that we saw nearby a few weeks ago.  Sure enough they were there, with their mother, and they were definitely much larger and fatter, but this time there were only three!

Michael gave the usual speed warnings before the descent of the stony track to Scoriton, but evidently Zac didn't heed them as he had collected a pinch puncture by the time he reached the bottom at 12.10.  Zac didn't have a spare tube or repair kit and neither, it turned out, did anyone else.  Even Michael had neglected to refill his puncture kit with new patches.  Fortunately Ryan's house was nearby, and after an abortive trip to get a spare tube which turned out to have a valve that wouldn't fit the rim he returned with a puncture kit which allowed Michael to effect repairs.

In view of the light rain that was now falling on us we headed striaght for home, getting back by around 1pm

Friday 30 July 2010 Evening Ride: Belford Mill 1900-2055
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Cloudy with some drizzle

Belford Mill track

Ryan was out this evening and once again he managed to persuade us to do his favourite ride - out to Ashburton, through the back lanes to the wedge-shaped Belford Mill and then down the woodland track back to Ashburton.  We stopped halfway down the track by the felled tree so the youngsters could eat refreshments and enjoy the jumps.

Sunday 25 July 2010 Morning Ride: Holne 1015-1300
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Dry with sunny spells

Ash, Zac and Callum at Holne playpark

Michael's attempt to arrange another full-day summer ride were not met with much enthusiasm from the members today who all seemed to want to be back by 1pm.  We rode out through Buckfast and then took the interesting track through Birchett's Wood.  This track always used to be very muddy at all times of the year, but Hallam recently told Michael it had received loads of wood chippings and we were pleasantly surprised to find today that, despite recent rain, it was nowhere near as muddy as we had expected.

Continuing through Scoriton and Michelcombe we were soon in Holne playpark enjoying the swings and Michael's chocolate box.  There was some debate about whether to visit the cafe, but in the end we decided to return home via the popular Slalom track through Hembury Woods.  Ashley couldn't resist having some fun with the jump near the bottom.

Friday 23 July 2010 Evening Ride: Dartington 1900-2105
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Sunny
Our ride this evening took us along Colston Road, where Michael had a chat with his relatives, and on past the kennels near Hood Manor where the din suggested that a great many dog owners had gone on holiday.  After ascending the new cycle path to the top of Dartington hill we decided to take a new road home, turning right for Rattery.  We stopped a little way up for some frisbee fun on a footpath in a field, but when a herd of cows turned up the youngsters feld for the gate!

Sunday 18 July 2010 Day ride: Redlake tramway 1015-1600
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Hallam Iles, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Dry & cloudy with sunny spells later

Panoramic views from Ugborough Beacon

View of the Avon Dam from the Abbots' Way

Our initial destination was Ugborough Beacon and everyone seemed happy about that.  We rode up Dean Hill and through South Brent, getting to Golf Links Road at Wrangaton by 11.30.  As usual the strict dress code in operation at the golf course provided some amusement (no t-shirts and all shirts must be tucked into trousers) but we didn't hang around long enough to risk getting struck by a golf ball.  The youngsters needed a rest halfway up the Beacon, and we stopped again near the rocks at the top for a short lunch while admiring the extensive views across South Devon.

After riding a short distance moorwards it was 12.50 and Michael presented the options for the second part of the ride: either take the track decent to Owley and head home via South Brent, or take the adventurous option along the Redlake Tramway, emerging eventually at Cross Furzes.  Hallam was a little anxious because he had arranged for his father John to collect him at 3.30 and had been instructed to ring if he was going to be later.  The mobile number to ring had been written in large numerals on his lunch box, but every time he rang he got a strange and increasingly-annoyed person answering.  Everyone wanted the adventurous option however so we decided we should go for it and would hopefully get back by 3.30 anyway.

The track was not especially rough so we made good progress.  Despite the mainly grey skies Callum quickly ran out of water (as usual) and was trying to take everyone else's - Michael made him promise to bring two bottles in future, but he still did a fair amount of whinging.

Eventually we neared the point where Michael knew we needed to strike out across open moorland to join the Abbots Way track near the Avon.  He got to what he felt sure was the right spot but couldn't see the gully that he had expected in the featureless moorland, so we pressed on a little until we caught sight of Redlake spoil heap itself.  This confirmed our location, so after a short backtrack we left the track and waded through the long grass past some of the ruins of old mineworkings.  Hallam was convinced Michael was lost, but quickly we reached the top near Petres Cross and headed down across the hills to the clapper bridge over the Avon, now bathed in bright sunshine.

A small side-stream was clean enough to quench the thirst of the few who were desperate.  Soon we had traversed the rough section of the Abbot's Way and came up behind the Avon Dam, looking magnificent in the afternoon sunshine.  Everyone enjoyed our familiar downhill to Cross Furzes, although Callum went a little too fast and took a tumble on the soft grass.  It was 3.58 when we finally reached Buckfastleigh: John had been waiting, and when he saw the number written on the lunchbox he said "I dictated the number to Steph and she wrote it on the box: I don't know whether I dictated it wrong, but that's not my number!".  So Hallam was forgiven and everyone felt pleased to have taken part in one of our most adventurous rides of the year.

Friday 16 July 2010 Evening Ride: - 1900-2200
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Heavy showers
Heavy showers around 7pm persuaded us to switch the ride to a social.  We went to Plymouth to play several games of Pool, called in at Tesco on the way home to get some snacks and finished with some computer games for the last ten minutes.

Sunday 11 July 2010 Morning Ride: - 1015-1530
3 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones Weather: Fair
Michael was delayed this morning by having to pump up his car tyre.  After a discussion we agreed a social today, travelling to PLymouth to see the film Shrek 3 in 3D.  It was a great movie and everyone enjoyed the morning.  When we got back we finished with some excellent network computer games.

Friday 9 July 2010 Evening Ride: Parkfield track 1900-2105

The first part of the Parkfield track

We took the old road to Ashburton, climbed Chuley hill and then took the track to the left that starts just past Parkfield.  The track has two sections: the first part was a bit rough but offered great views across the surrounding hills in the glorious evening sunshine.  The second section, running through woodland at a lower level, was infested with many swarms of flies but included some great jumps for the mountain bikers.

We pressed on to Landscove and played with the frisbee in the school playing fields - Ryan almost lost it when it landed on top of a tall hedge but fortunately it fell down through the bushes so we could reach it.   Conditions were very humid so from there we headed straight home via Green Lane.

The group at Venford reservoir

The plan this morning was to take the track to Dartmeet but by the time we got to Venford reservoir showers were threatening so we contented ourselves with riding the track the circles the reservoir.  The water level was strikingly low today and we were able to walk on areas of rocky grassland that are usually submerged.

We returned via the lower Hembury Woods track, by which time conditions were distinctly damp.

Ash and Callum skim stones across the Dart in Hembury Woods

The start of this evening ride was delayed until 7.30 because Ash had some punctures to fix, and since the lads were tired after sports day we agreed on an easy ride to the tracks in Hembury Woods.  We didn't see anybody else in the woods at all as we sped along the rugged paths and tracks.  Michael managed to drop a huge stone in the river whilst Ash and Callum were searching for skimming stones and they didn't really manage to get their revenge.

Sam and Charles Acland turned up for this evening's ride but because they had forgotten to ring in advance and nobody else had rung, Michael had already made other arrangements for the evening.  Sadly, therefore, the ride could not take place, but Michael was disappointed and hoped that Sam and Charles would be able to make it next week.

Friday 12 March 2010 Social: Cinema trip 1900-2200
6 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Jack Parnell

To celebrate Ashley's recent bithday we enjoyed a special trip to the Odeon cinema at Exeter to watch the latest 3D movie Alice in Wonderland - a much darker and more action-packed movie than the older versions.  The movie was great and everyone enjoyed their evening.

Our first car-assisted ride of the year was a great success thanks to some superb weather.  The ride started from Black Forest Lodge near Starcross and it wasn't long before we had ridden past the deer of Powderham Castle and were starting off along the path that follows the Exe estuary.  The recent absence of rain had left the path relatively mid-free today.

Just after joining the canal cycle path at Turf Lock we were fortunate to come across a huge flock of Canada geese resting on the nearby marshland.  Fishermen lined the canal, and Exeter Rowing Club were doing their best to avoid the many swans that got in their way.

Everyone was ready for lunch when we arrived at Pizza Hut at 1.15, and shortly after 2pm we set off again for a gentle ride around the park.  Ash was keen to show Callum the trampoline as they are both quite skilled at bouncing.

As usual the Quay was swarming with people drawn out by the glorious weather, and progress along the cycle path was slow at times.  We soon hit the freedom of the main path however, returning past the swing bridges and back along the canal to Starcross.  Callum got a puncture just before we reached the car, so we didn't need to fix it today.

Friday 5 March 2010 Social: Movie night 1900-2200

Our first movie night of the season took place this evening, with everyone very much enjoying the award-winning animation Up.

Sunday 28 February 2010 Morning Ride: Rattery 1120-1300
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Cold with showers

Deer near Pennywell

Delays to the start of our ride were inevitable when Zac turned up with a puncture.  In the end he also found he had ceased brakes, so he borrowed a neighbour's bike and we finally set off at around 11.20.  Showers didn't make the climb to Pennywell particularly enjoyable, but a group of deer over the hedge, presumably owed by Pennywell Farm, provided a great photo opportunity.

Ryan was finding the cycling tough after a recent injury, so after passing through Rattery we turned right to cross the A38 and then descended Dean hill, getting back at around 1pm.

Friday 26 February 2010 Social: Pool 1900-2200
5 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

Well they wanted a trip out but couldn't afford bowling, so Pool became the plan.  We had four games each at Plymouth, alternating pairings, and whilst everyone had some great games the main news of the night was how much Callum had improved since last time!  Ashley and Ryan played an arcade game that went on for ages, then we dropped into Tesco as usual on the way home.

Sunday 21 February 2010 Morning Ride: Broadhempston 1015-1330
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Sunny but chilly

The group at Michelcombe

Some members were still away for half term, but four of us enjoyed a good ride to Broadhempston via Green Lane.  The roads were icy in places after some overnight rain and sleet, so we had to take care.

The playpark at Broadhempston has been extended since we were last there, someone having taken out the tall hedge between the park and the adjacent field.  Our frisbees have gone over that hedge several times in the past, previously necessitating a walk halfway around the village to get to the far gate.  Today we were able to use the whole field for our firsbee, boomerang and tennis ball games.

We returned home via Staverton and the riverside track, arriving just in time to see a holiday diesel special running on the train line.  Zac just couldn't resist going into the station to buy some Milky Bars from the antique penny vending machine, and of course everyone else followed suit.

Friday 19 February 2010 Social: Cinema trip 1900-2200
4 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

Tonight we managed to arrange a long-overdue trip to the cinema at Plymouth, this time to see "Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief".  The film is often compared with Harry Potter, but it's really nothing like it.  Everyone thought it was an excellent evening out.

Sunday 14 February 2010 Morning Ride: Holne 1015-1315
6 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Matt Porter Weather: Cold (3º)

The group at Michelcombe

We haven't had six on a ride for quite some time, so there was a real buzz in the air as we set off up Silver Street and through to Scoriton.  It was a cold morning but everyone had good gloves today.  When Ryan had called home to collect something we continued through Michelcombe and up the gentle climb to Holne where we amused ourselves for at quarter of an hour in the play park: refreshments, rope swing and frisbee were the principal pursuits.

AS we were in Holne some members just had to call into the local shop to spend some more of their money, then we continued through the lanes and took the excellent track that descends through Holne woods to River Dart Country Park.  Everyone was up to top speed today so we had a great ride and got home quickly via the old Ashburton road.

Friday 12 February 2010 Social: Tennis 1900-2200
3 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones

After playing some computer games until 7.35 Callum finally got his wish when we headed to Ivybridge to play tennis in the huge indoor courts there - £6 per person, but the other members who usually blocked his request just weren't here to stop him tonight.  Callum learned how to serve properly tonight and we all thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Sunday 7 February 2010 Morning Ride: Belford Mill 1015-1250
5 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Matt Porter Weather: Cloudy and cold

Callum, Matt, Ryan and Ashley near Woodencliff Wood

Matt Porter made his long-awaited return to the club today, and Ryan turned out as his back had made a faster-than-expected recovery.  The temperature was just three degrees this morning and with mist covering the moorland we decided to head for Ashburton.  After a quick play in the park we took the lane that goes past the strange, wedge-shaped building that is Belford Mill and then headed back along the woodland track through Woodencliff Woods.  A bunch of dogs took a particular interest in Matt, so Ash stayed with him to keep them under control.

Ryan's back was now causing him some discomfort so we headed straight back through the middle of AShburton, unusually taking the "cycle path" along the side of the A38 to make a particularly easy downhill return to Buckfastleigh.  Ryan described it as "sketchy but fun"!

Friday 5 February 2010 Social: Squash 1900-2200
5 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

After some games of Call of Duty we set off at 7.35 for Paignton where we had booked two squash courts from 8.15 until 9.00.  Sadly Ryan was unable to play owing to a back injury, but he was able to sit down in the viewing area of the show court to watch whichever of us was playing there at the time.  Zac and Callum had not played squash much before but made good progress with some training from Michael and Ash.

We called in to Paignton's Morrisons on the way home only to discover that it had closed at 9pm - not at all like our 24-hour Tesco at Lee Mill!  WE went instead to the Morrisons garage: the cleaning woman had just mopped the floor and didn’t seem at all pleased that we were in there!  We got back at 9.48 and of course the youngsters just had to make use of the last twelve minutes for another game on the PCs!

Sunday 31 January 2010 Morning Ride: Avon Dam 1015-1330

Ice on the road from Shipley Bridge to Avon Dam

View of the Avon Dam

With ice on the roads and near freezing temperatures in the morning sunshine Michael was surprised when everyone was up for a ride to the Avon Dam.  They were still keen after we had climbed the lane from Dean to Skerraton, so we headed straight for Shipley bridge.

The private road from Shipley up to the dam had serious patches of ice over it, and Ash came off three times in a row on one patch - much to everyone's amusement.  He's not one to be defeated by a bit of ice however and having learned the hard way not to brake or turn on it he finished by riding confidently to the end.

Some light snow fell as we rode the final stretch to the dam, making everything look very scenic, but in view of our proposed route home we were not disappointed when the snow shower came to an end.  It really was bitterly cold - hands taken out of gloves for our chocolate break by the river took a considerable time to warm up again.

After admiring the view of the reservoir we headed across the open moor for the Abbots Way.  A large group of very attractive Dartmoor ponies greeted us as we started up the climb, and we then met a family of cyclists heading the same way as us.  They rode with us down the fabulous moorland descent, and were no doubt amused when Ash's front wheel sank into what he thought was a frozen bog, jammed solid and forced him into a somersault over the handlebars!  He was sore and bruised for the remainder of the ride, but as usual put a brave face on it.

Friday 29 January 2010 Social: Computer games 1900-2200
5 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

Our plans for squash or tennis were thwarted by the non-availability of courts for the former and the high price (£6 per person) of indoor courts for the latter.  We had to content ourselves with an evening of computer games, including Dawn of War on the PC network.

Sunday 24 January 2010 Morning Ride: Holne 1015-1300
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones Weather: Sunny but cold

Callum, Ryan and Ashley on the lower Hembury track

Holne cafe and shop

On another fine winter morning we headed along the lower Hembury track, but by the time we reached Gallant le Bower everyone seemed too tired to consider Michael's proposal of Spitchwick and Dr Blackall's Drive.  Instead we diverted to the cafe at Holne for hot drinks and teacakes, and then headed home via Scoriton.

Friday 22 January 2010 Social: Bowling 1900-2200
5 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

A unanimous decision was made to do ten-pin bowling tonight at Plymouth.  Michael stunned himself by beating his own personal record - three strikes in a row, commonly known as a turkey, got him a final score of 152.  Ash beat his personal best too getting a spare and two strikes in a row with a final score of 134.  After a game of pool and a little time on the arcades we headed for home, calling in at Tesco so the youngsters could buy themselves some cheap treats.  There was still time for a short game of Call of Duty before the social ended at 10pm.

Sunday 17 January 2010 Morning Ride: Dartington 1015-1335
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Sunny but quite cold

Today's weather was just about perfect for winter cycling, and seemed to be the first sunny Sunday we have had for months.  Everyone was keen to make the most of it with a good ride, so we headed along Colston road to the new cycle path to Dartington.  There was much enthusiasm about the Easter tour and car-assisted rides, so this really was turning out to be a great start to our new year of cycling.

We expected everything at the Cider Press Centre to be closed at this time of year and so were planning on continuing to Totnes, but amazingly several outlets were open and nobody could resist the prospect of refreshments at Cranks restaurant.

Once cakes and drinks had been consumed Zac and Ryan wanted to check out the "healthy" sweet shop.  Michael thought he would try some chocolate-coated turkish delight for the first time in many years but it didn't work out too well: he got only four small pieces for 98p, and Ash, who had never tried it before, said it tasted like soap!  Well I suppose it does really.

It was now gone twelve so we headed back along the main road over Riverford bridge and then took the track to Hole farm.  Ryan had some knee problems but we eventually reached home by 1.35, allowing the gamers a couple of hours to have fun on the computers.

Friday 15 January 2010 Social: Badminton 1900-2200
5 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

Zac's attempts to block our proposed badminton evening came to nothing, so after a few games of Call of Duty on the PC network we set off for Combeshead school for some excellent badminton matches, joined at the end by a teacher from our local school who happened to be there playing with a club and showed the less experienced members how to play!

Sunday 10 January 2010 Morning Ride: Computer games -
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Snowing, very cold

With snow still lying everywhere and more snow falling it was amazing that Ryan and Zac actually managed to get down at all - Ash walked through the woods and Ryan managed to cycle from Holne, saying that the roads weren't so icy up there!  Michael tried making a short car journey into town, managed to get 10 metres before realising it was a bad idea and then had to clear the snow with a shovel to get back to his parking space!

In view of the deteriorating weather conditions we didn't even attempt a ride today, contenting ourselves with computer games until the earlier than usual 2.30 finish.

Friday 8 January 2010 Social: Computer games 1900-2200
4 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath

Today's social came at the end of another day of snow and an unexpected day off school for our younger members.  Callum only managed to get down by hitching a lift on a quad bike!  Our game of Lord of the Rings ended in failure on the open map of Tournament Hills because Zac and Callum just couldn't defend their own bases, but we still enjoyed the battle.  WE spend the rest of the evening playing the inevitable Call of Duty on the PC network, when Michael demonstrated that other perks can be just as effective as Juggernaut.

Sunday 3 January 2010 Morning Ride: Buckfast 1130-1300
4 Present: Ash Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath Weather: Very cold but dry

With near-freezing temperatures we delayed today's ride until 11.30, but even then our short ride to Buckfast proved too chilling for some: there wasn't much ice around but a few had inadequate gloves.  We ended up just skirting back around to Buckfastleigh for 1pm and concluding with the usual computer games until 3.30.

Friday 1 January 2010 Social: Computer games 1900-2200
4 Present: Ashley Freeman, Callum Freeman, Ryan Havinga, Michael Jones

Michael had downloaded a Playstation 3 version of Pinball Dreams today, but when everyone had finished trying it out we got on with a serious game of Lord of the Rings - four brutal armies kept us occupied until 9.30 but we cmae through with a victory in the end after some good teamwork.  We finished with some epic battles on Call of Duty.
